Season 1: Live Richly

Episode 5

Connection

In this episode of Maximize Your Potential, I introduce the fifth key: connection. I explain all the ways in which connection can play a crucial role in our success.

Here’s what’s covered in this episode:

What is connection?
We all crave connection, but establishing and maintaining it can be very challenging. We are all social creatures, so it’s important for us to foster relationships, both in life and in sales.

Connection in your career

In sales, we all aspire to be trusted advisors, with trust and communication being key. I built my business around the idea of connection between my customers, employees, and clients.

Connection in life

We need to be connected to people around us to survive. For instance, my wife and I set aside five minutes each day to talk non-logistically and connect.

Trust and honesty

We have to build trust by being honest and always following through on our promises.

Developing rapport

It’s about more than talking about the weather. How do you get to know someone and have them truly get to know you? It’s all about the details, and being authentic.

Communication and listening

We all need to over-communicate. We often believe we’re communicating well when, in fact, we need to communicate more. Sometimes we talk too much—listening is crucial.

Connection is not one-sided

It’s a give-and-take concept. Communicating goes both ways with intentional speaking plus active listening.

Takeaway challenge

Spend five minutes talking with a significant other or friend non-logistically, then listen for five minutes without talking.
